Self-Assessment and Reflection
At the beginning of the semester I set a goal of improving my Katakana reading skills and knowledge of Kanji. I believe I succeeded and have improved those skills. I challenge I faced this semester is time management, especially since I wanted to improve those skills in my own time. Also figuring out how I would improve those skills. I decided on writing repetition using a Genkouyoushi notebook. Furthermore, the consistent reading in class helped me with my knowledge of kanji and building up comprehension skill sets like utilizing context clues. Since I hope to go to Japan in the future this knowledge and skill set will be extremely important when navigating life around Japan. For example, reading a restaurant’s title and menu, looking for directions, navigating the train station. The Online Reading Learning assignments especially assisted with this aspect because each was about necessary things in Japan like how the trash and recycling system works in Japan and recognizing the vocabulary for it. I hope to continue increasing my reading skills, especially improving my knowledge of kanji by utilizing the skills I learned in this class!
