Why are you interested in cybersecurity technology? Select four other majors offered by ODU and explain how those majors relate to cybersecurity.

Hello some of you might already know who I am but just in case you don’t I go by many usernames online like khi2wavyy, khi2fly, kingkhi, and many more but my name is Mekhi, and I am a freshman and university student at Old Dominion University. I’ve always been interested in technology (tech) ever since I was a kid and because of that when it was time to choose a career and field of study I wanted to involve myself in something that would ultimately lead to me using tech on a daily day-to-day basis.

At first, I was interested in computer science but realized that there would be a lot of competition in those fields with not a lot of reward for the amount of effort put in during school to get that degree. So many people get stressed and overwhelmed that they often switch majors halfway through and although I like being challenged I felt that if I could save myself time and effort I could focus on other avenues in life so I looked elsewhere. Then I thought about majoring in education since I like being the center of attention and talking to people I could teach them and develop the next generations to be good and honest members of society however I thought how most teachers don’t really get the respect they deserve and are often overlooked and overworked in their careers not feeling appreciated. Thought about and considered computer engineering as well since I love building things and I basically would be designing and creating contraptions from blueprints same goes for mechanical engineering, I like taking things apart dissecting them then putting them back together.

Overall though I felt I wanted to do something that I could see myself doing for a long period of time that wasn’t too taxing or stressful but that would also incorporate my original desire on working with computers. That’s when I was presented with cybersecurity the protection of computer systems and networks from attack by malicious attackers. I would in a sense basically be a superhero helping companies fight bad guys in a simple sense and I thought it fit pretty well. The other majors I listed are similar in the sense that you help society grow as a whole innovating with technology and computer systems. So here I am currently majoring in cybersecurity.

Describe four ethical issues that arise when storing electronic information about individuals.

Compare cybersecurity risks in the U.S. and another country.

Ethics is the concept and application of ethical thinking to the practical concerns of the uses of technology. The reason technology ethics is growing in prominence is that new technologies give us more power to access others which means that we have to make choices in which others aren’t negatively impacted. One issue, in particular, is cyberbullying and cyberstalking online. Cyberstalking is a next-level problem in today’s society, It’s stalking and harassment through the use of the Internet to harass an individual, group, or organization for their own benefit or gain. So in my point of view, we’re gonna discuss the negative effects social media has on mental health and how technology has given easier access to influence others.

There have been many incidents and situations in CS in which the abusers caused false accusations, defamation, slander, and libel which can end people’s livelihoods and careers just to get what they want. Sometimes the stalking can drive individuals to commit even worse crimes including monitoring, identity theft, threats, vandalism, solicitation for sex, doxing, or blackmail. The main goal of the cyberstalker is to harass, target, and manipulate individuals in order to fulfill their disturbing goals or desires. I feel as if with the expansion of technology being spread all across and over the world people have and are given access to way more people than ever before. Although communicating with others and being social is what humans need to do in order to thrive and evolve as a society there are bad people in the world who have malicious intentions to do whatever it takes to take advantage of and hurt others. You could message thousands of days on multiple platforms such as Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, and Youtube, and although there are ways to block and protect yourself from weirdos online if they try hard enough they can bypass you by simply blocking an account. Speaking of social media privacy is a big discussion at the moment as companies can willingly take your personal information without your consent and knowledge. Although our government tries to combat this it’s up to companies’ ethics and motives regarding what they do with their policies and contracts.

Another ethical imbalance is the inflation of technology as a whole as we grow in technology the prices of computers and smartphones are increasing despite the actual manufacturing cost not really increasing that much in value. For the amount of money, the united states are profiting from technology in comparison to the rest of the world it’s actually sad that it is the country with the biggest cyber risk of them all. Countries in the EU like the Uk  constantly trying to prevent cybercrime was doubling down on companies and corporations making sure they keep their citizens protected. Besides Tiktok possibly being banned as a US citizen it feels as if data and information leakage is never talked about and is thrown aside. Other countries actually care and even enforce companies to make things easier for the consumer like them forcing apple to make all their products USB C for convenience.

How has cyber technology created opportunities for workplace deviance?

Workplace deviance is the deliberate desire to cause harm to an organization and/or more specifically a workplace. Examples of deviance are deliberate, malicious attempts to sabotage an organization by causing problems in the workplace almost like a secret spy in a film working against its company or enemy pretending to be allied with them. It can also be defined as voluntary behavior that violates social workplace normalities putting the organization and its workers at risk. The rise in cyber technology has created more opportunities for workplace deviance to occur especially during covid where you didn’t even have to show up to a building you could just work from home. Cyber loafing is also a crime when employees use their companies’ Internet access for personal purposes during work hours. Other things like abuse of property and not following company policies can be considered workplace deviance. Most companies allow workers to use work phones or computers to access their personal information during work hours which could cause a risk of an information leak. The rise of technology has caused such a bigger problem for companies because many people take advantage of and misuse the technology given to them. Essentially companies especially in the united states don’t put any stock and value into the security systems for the business and workers don’t help as they oft loaf around like a pokémon who is overleveled for their trainer. This makes it easy for hackers and malware traffickers to steal information from businesses and companies effortlessly. I feel as if everyone needs to do their part in order to prevent and protect themselves from these situations. Most contractors and employers have to sign in order to work at certain companies but a lot of times they are broken so if stricter rules are put in place and enforced everyone would be safe.

What are the costs and benefits of developing cybersecurity programs in business?

Cybersecurity is something that is ultimately one of the most important things you need to review and develop time and resources into before thinking about starting your own business especially if the majority of its work and consistency takes place online on the internet no matter how big or small your online business is. As the internet industry online grows more and more day by day there has been of course have been an increased demand for cyber security as people are going to suffer cyber attacks from cyber criminals looking to steal your information in order to benefit themselves. However even tho It is certainly something that has caught the attention of smaller-sized businesses They have a lack of funds and are more limited in using certain resources so naturally, they have a limited amount of spending. There are easy ways for people around the world to access your web search business acquisitions as well as credit card records due to less attention to cybersecurity so it’s important you must take the time of day to research how to prevent these matters. Small businesses are more vulnerable to cyber crimes causing an increased risk of going out of business because of how little they spend dedicating time money and resources into cyber security programs to keep their data protected. According to THE IMPACT OF CYBERSECURITY ON SMALL BUSINESS “Fifty percent of small to medium-sized businesses (SMB) have been the victims of cyber attack and over 60% of those attacked go out of business.” So if I was starting my own online business even with the limited resources I have ultimately at the bare minimum 20% of my overall profits as well as my initial investments would be going into software and virus protection programs to keep my data encrypted and safe.

How can you tell if your computer is safe?

Describe three ways that computers have made the world safer and less safe.

One way computers have made the world less secure is that the act of crime is now easier to commit without being caught or traced. So many crypto currency scams have been happening recently and unless the abuser admits to their crime it’s very hard and oftentimes not worth the effort of tracking their ID unless millions of dollars are at stake. There have also been many incidents and situations in CS in which the abusers caused false accusations, defamation, slander, and libel which can end people’s livelihoods and careers just to get what they want. Sometimes the stalking can drive individuals to commit even worse crimes including monitoring, identity theft, threats, vandalism, solicitation for sex, doxing, or blackmail. The other bad thing about computers is that your data is not secured online despite the notion that it is many companies have and can steal access to your personal data despite claiming that they won’t in the user agreements. Cancel culture is also a big issue recently as any and everything you say online can and will be used against you which could ruin the chances of you getting into a college or a job in the future. On the other hand, one-way computers have made this world safer is that you can check up on someone any time of the day 24/7 so now if you’re worried about someone’s safety or well-being you have access to them at your fingertips with location tracking and texting. Another way computers have made this world safer is through the use of passwords and multi-factor authentication. Now if an individual tries to log in to my bank account email youtube channel etc they will be locked out and a text will be sent to me letting me aware and know of what device it trying to log in to at what location and what time. Overall there are positives and negatives that come with computers. The way in which I can tell my computer is safe is depending on if i’m logged into a private internet network and if I put up two function authercations on all my important personal belongings online while also being cautious of the websites I visit.

How do engineers make cyber networks safer? What is the overlap between criminal justice and cybercrime? How does this overlap relate to the other disciplines discussed in this class?

Cybercrime is self-explanatory it’s when criminal activity is carried out on the internet and through the use of technology. Criminal justice is the delivery of justice (think about a power ranger or superhero) to someone who has committed a crime. As technology has become more and more popular naturally as a result cybercrime has begun to also increase. This means that people who work in the criminal justice field have to gain knowledge in cyber security in order to stop cyber crimes from happening. Pretty simple so far, anyways The people who are stopping cyber attackers are people who work in the criminal justice field they culminate and work hand and hand. Although criminal justice is the overall term for someone who works in the field to stop crime, these people are still trying to stop all crimes. Where cybersecurity is more zoned in on cyber and online attacks. Some may be specialized in a certain direction and have a level of expertise in an area, but there is someone in the criminal justice field that tries to stop cyber crimes from happening. These types of threats will be broken down by someone in the criminal justice field in order to catch the criminal. Whether the crime is happening to a single person or an entire company someone in the criminal justice field will have the chance of catching the criminal just like a comic book or manga superhero will. Cybercrime and cyber security is just looking at a specific type of crime, so someone in the criminal justice field can catch a criminal completing the act of cybercrime. As technology advances so will cybercrime, so people working in the criminal justice field also have to enhance their knowledge about crime. Even though criminal justice and cybersecurity are similar the types of people they deal with and their respective interactions between offenders and victims are different than one when a typical crime occurs. Cybercriminal interactions are mostly and usually over the internet. In most cases, the offenders do the crime over the internet and most times the offender does not know their victims. I think this makes it harder to find the offender because the offender is not actually seen doing the attack or the crime as I explained about crypto scams. Many offenders can plan in advance and find information about the victim they are planning on attacking or are working closely with the victim like a spy waiting to pray on them through the use of technology.

How does cyber technology impact interactions between offenders and victims? How should we approach the development of cyber-policy and -infrastructure given the “short arm” of predictive knowledge?

The rise in cyber technology has created more opportunities for workplace deviance to occur especially during covid where you didn’t even have to show up to a building you could just work from home. Most companies allow workers to use work phones or computers to access their personal information during work hours which could cause a risk of an information leak. The rise of technology has caused such a bigger problem for companies because many people take advantage of and misuse the technology given to them. Malicious attempts to sabotage an organization by causing problems in the workplace almost like a secret spy in a film working against its company or enemy pretending to be allied with them can cause a huge loss in a company which can cause corporations billions of dollars while also causing workers to lose jobs and their livelihoods. Essentially companies especially in the united states don’t put any stock and value into the security systems for the business and workers don’t help as they oft loaf around like a pokemon who is overleveled for their trainer.
