
In the 2020 playoffs, the NBA had gone through massive changes switching to their bubble playoff method in an attempt to combat the pandemic. The pandemic had sent the world into a lockdown and the US was tested with major civil unrest amongst the nation. One specific incident was the tragic shooting of Jacob Blake, in response multiple players from the Milwaukee Bucks walked out of the game in response to the shooting. George Hill, point guard for the Bucks at the time was the leader of the walk out believing it was their responsibility to make a statement. Instead of this only being a minuscule one game protest, this echoed throughout the league and the world to people all over the world there were walkouts involving hundreds of athletes in professional men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and soccer, as well as one of the world’s biggest tennis stars.

At this time media channels all around the world were capturing athletes around the country walking out and holding out in protest to the shootings. All over the world social media the walkout was being praised by media outlets and people all around the world. The NBA led a country wide walk out of many of sports top athletes in response to the shooting; and around this time it was polarizing because Donald Trump criticized the walkouts and many of the supporters of the president resented the actions of the walkouts caused by the NBA. This in turn divided many Americans amongst each other, social media was divided and media outlets were divided, many outlets covered and critiqued the other’s side. The NBA had caused a worldwide revolution, athletes everywhere revolted after videos of the shooting surfaced. The media changed how many saw the whole movement, players worked together to walkout and stand for something they felt was right. The media handling of the walkout will echo for generations as multiple platforms chose sides and criticized the moves of the many of the athletes that participated in the lockout.
