Exploring Culture

During the time, I was in Spanish class this semester. What helped me gain a lot more practice and better myself in this language was being able to do those lingo hub activities. It made me better myself by being able to use the correct verb or adjective.

The way Lingo Hub helped me to better my Spanish was how we would have to read or practice certain words and then wed have to use them in stories or corporate them into emails we would send to someone we know. We would also have audios where they would say something, and we would have to pick the correct words that went with the audio. With this being said, it also helped me a lot not only in the language but with the Hispanic culture as well. I feel like now that I know more of which punctuations I need to use, I can talk to the more distant family since I can actually spell correctly now. It was a bit challenging, especially when it came to taking the quizzes with the unit we were in. Since I grew up speaking differently from Spanish and now, learning this type of Spanish was a bit hard to get at first.

I did come across some challenges while being in the class. I sometimes mistake certain words with others. Likewise, I also sometimes use the past tense instead of the present tense. Furthermore, I also still sometimes forget to add the little dash into the words that need those little punctuations. It caused me to work through a lot because sometimes I ended up failing a quiz or not getting such a good grade in an assignment only because it was my own mistake, and it was a very careless one. For example, on a quiz, I don’t remember what section, but I got a 0 because I didn’t listen carefully, and I went right away and clicked on the answer.

Engaging in Communities

In English, give a brief description of the value of, and importance of, engaging in your immediate community and the global community.

The value this class thought with my Hispanic community was big. For example, when at the beginning of the semester, we watched a video on different ways to greet people in Spanish culture. I remember writing about how I wouldn’t feel comfortable greeting people with a kiss on the cheek. Seeing someone greet someone In that form is not as common here as it is in other countries. However, my family does greet each other with a kiss, but I feel like that’s okay because it’s family, and it’s to a stranger.

Interpersonal Communication

During the semester we had different types of assignments. We had a discussion board, and conference calls with the professor during the semester to see how it was going during the course. We also had conversation projects with a partner to go over the certain unit we were learning. Not only that, but we would have to come up with ways to build a conversation in Spanish.

However, being able to take this class, I feel like it helped me a lot. Being able to have conversations with someone else in the class and the teacher, would build my confidence a bit more because they would correct me if I was wrong and would help If I had a question. With the discussion boards, it was very interesting to be able to see the other student’s opinions and what they had to say about the same assignment. It is so crazy that with the same assignment, we can all have different opinions or process the assignment completely differently from one another. Yes, there were times when the assignments were hard, and sometimes I didn’t know what to say with the discussion boards, but then I would just reread it or think for a while until I came up with something that connected with that assignment. Something I did excel at was being able to spell so much better and being able to understand the punctuations a lot better now. Something I would do differently next time is to spend more time on the punctuations to end up being able to use them all the time without using the wrong one or missing them when I write or text.

Presentational Speaking

In English, give a brief 2-3-line description of any presentational speaking activities you completed this semester inside or outside of class for or related to your Spanish learning. Include a recording of one of these speaking activities. (See Modes of Communication link for description and examples).

With those assignments, I uploaded my partner and I would look at the assignment, and we would have to come up with questions and a conversation we would have while being on a Zoom call with each other. We had sometimes some technical difficulties because of internet reasons or my partner was traveling because he’s in the military. We would always figure it out at the end. Something I excelled at was being able to have a normal conversation with someone who else is learning Spanish, knowing I won’t get laughed at or judged at all. I would just practice more next time.

Presentational Writing

In English, give a very brief 2-3-line description of the presentational communication of compositions, pamphlets, blogs, flyers, stories, articles, and any other written presentation activities you completed this semester inside or outside of class for or related to your Spanish learning. Include a copy of a written presentational activity you produced? (See Modes of Communication link for description and examples).

Then, in a paragraph, write a reflection that includes each of the activities you described above in which you explain how you have grown with each assignment or activity. What became easier and what was difficult? How did you overcome the difficulties? What did you excel at and why? How could you do better next time?

Interpretive Listening

Some listening activities we had done this semester for Spanish were some activities on Lingo hub. Which were watching a short clip of two students having a conversation, then me having to answer the correct question to what they were saying.

Different things I listened to during this class were just Lingo hub videos to get the assignments done. Something I found interesting and helped me a lot was trying to figure out what the video on lingo to see what it meant. My takeaway from this experience is it’s not always good just to go based on images because they don’t always mean what you think they mean.

Interpretive Reading

Certain assignments in this class were mostly us reading stuff on lingo or answering questions that were recorded, and we would answer them with videos also. We also had done a few assignments talking about ourselves to get the class to learn a little about us. The professor would also upload videos where we would have to answer her questions with recordings.

Some things were sometimes a bit hard to understand at the beginning of the semester. Something that was challenging sometimes was getting over my fear of speaking to the camera. After a couple of times having to record, I got over my fear of speaking into a camera. The more and more I did it, I felt comfortable. Now I do it without even thinking about it. The way that I feel I’ve grown since doing these types of assignments is. I actually like recording myself now, especially for Spanish because I have videos of when I didn’t know how to pronounce words to now being able to.
