My name is Al McClenney. I am a native to Hampton Roads, currently residing in Virginia Beach, VA. As a long time employee of a major local hospital, I am currently in the role of Co-Director of Facilities Engineering. In this role, I oversee the mechanical, electrical, plumbing and maintenance departments of the campus. My interest in engineering was developed at an early age. As a small child, I watched my father for countless hours as he would troubleshoot and repair everything in our home that would stop working, from the vacuum cleaner, to the washing machine, and even the family car. His ability to fearlessly take things apart and figure out how they work always amazed me, and it developed within me a sense of wonder about how things are engineered, and how it all works together to function as a complete system. I am the first member of my family to attend college, and never thought I would be the one to carry the torch, but here I am. As a senior at Old Dominion University, I have experienced first hand the challenges of working full time in a demanding job while balancing the load of school work that is required to be a successful student. While it is not an easy endeavor, it is quite rewarding to see myself moving closer to my goal of a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering Technology degree. Prior to my employment at the hospital, I spent many years in the field as a master electrician in electrical construction and repair. I also ran my own successful electrical contracting company during that time. While my background in electrical is strong, I decided that I needed to learn more about the other systems involved in a facility in order to better understand my current job. It is my hope that the study of thermal applications will help me to gain more insight into some of these systems, and how they function as a whole. Every class involved in my pursuit of a BMET degree has move me closer to my goals, and will inevitably lead me to become a better professional in my field and to a more fulfilling career in the very near future.
