Mid-Semester Reflection

Study Habits

  • What classes are you doing well in, and why?

I am doing well in my chemistry lab class, sociology, and psychology class. The reason I am doing well is because the teacher thoroughly explains the lessons in a way that I can understand

  • What classes did you identify as needing assistance in?

Some classes that I need assistance with are human nature and chemistry

  • What changes have you made (i.e. amount of time, location, campus resources, study strategies, etc…)?

One change that I have made is where I choose to study and do my homework. I used to study in my bed or around some of my friends and that caused me to become sidetracked but now I choose to study alone and I choose to do my homework on my desk.

Transition to College

  • What expectations did you have coming to college?

Some expectations that I had for myself were that I would turn my work in on time, Try and make it to every class that I had, Be more organized with my time and my work, and try to seek additional help from professors or others if I felt like I needed it.

  • Have those expectations come to fruition, or not?

For many of these expectations, this did come to fruition but the ones that have not were being more organized with my time and trying to make it to every class

  • How?

My 8 a.m. makes it challenging to get to one because it’s so early and even if you are a minute late to my 8 a.m. your attendance doesn’t get accounted for.

  • In what way is your college experience different from what you expected?

One way that college is different is that not all of my classes are held in huge lecture halls that are filled with a lot of students most of my classes have a small amount in them.

  • What has surprised you about your experiences so far this semester?

Something that has surprised me this far about my first semester is that you can make a friend or make connections with just about anyone while doing anything on this campus if you just speak up.

  • If you live on campus: What has been your toughest challenge with moving away to college? Easiest challenge to overcome?

One of the toughest challenges that I have experienced by moving away to college is being away from the people that I care about and not being able to see them daily as well as trying to get to my 8 a.m. on time. The easiest challenge in college for me to overcome was making new friendships in college.

Major

  • Name something you have learned about your intended major that you did not know at the beginning of the semester.

Something that I didn’t know about before choosing to become a nursing major is that I would have to move after my second year of college down to a whole new place away from people that I made connections with.

  • Have your feelings changed about your intended major? List some thoughts you are having.

Yes, my thoughts about my major have changed because I would have to leave the people that I know and what worries me is the test and how we have to compete with each other to get into the school.

  • Is there another subject (major or minor) that you are interested in learning more about?

I think I might minor in education or major in psychology.

Connecting to Campus

  • Name one problem or challenge you have encountered this semester, and which resource(s) at ODU you have/can utilize to assist with this situation.

One problem that I have encountered is asking for help or asking questions in class because I get nervous that what I’m saying doesn’t make sense. But a way I have helped my situation is that I go to office hours and ask for help and ask the teachers questions.

  • Is there a friend, roommate, professor, advisor, or group in the ODU community who has helped you so far this semester? If so, how did they help you?

I think my roommate and my friends have helped me find the motivation to get my work done and go to class.

  • Have you attended an interest meeting for a club? Why did you decide to get involved or not get involved?

No, I honestly just haven’t had the time or opportunity to try and get involved in a club I just feel like this first semester is already overwhelming as is for me
