Week 3 Part 2

Whether it be for personal, emotional, or financial reasons, deviance at some point within the workplace is inevitable.  Deviance occurs when someone does something that is out of the ordinary according to societal norms.  As cyber technology has evolved to be as big and complex as it is today, we have seen an increase in the opportunities for deviance.  This applies everywhere, no matter if it is at home, or school, or the dentist, with more IT comes more ability to create devious acts.  These acts can cause people to suffer serious consequences, while others can something as sending a co-worker a silly message using a messaging application.

How might one commit a devious act with such a thing as cyber technology? Consider someone who is the authorized user to a certain file with some top-secret information stored away within this file.  This user could then set the permissions to whatever he wanted, and cause damage to that precious file.  Another example could be an employee who seeks revenge with the CEO’s of his company after he feels he was mistreated.  So, he uses his self-taught cyber skills to launch a successful malware attack on the company’s servers costing them a great amount of time and money.  A computer programmer could create a bug that would delete the user’s photos and videos.  Another form of deviance could include two rival cyber-sales representatives trying to sabotage each other’s reputation by leaking embarrassing photos through snooping through their drawer and finding a password written down.

Cyber technology really opened up a great deal of opportunities for deviance within the workplace.  Although this technology has allowed us to become much more efficient and powerful, we must keep in mind that dangers that go along with some of the more serious forms of deviance including bullying, identity theft, and fraud.
