STEP 1: EVALUATE YOUR STUDY HABITS
1.Describe your current methods of study. How do you study for each class?
For each class I study in different ways. In my English classes I usually try to read more and make sure that my writing skills stay up to par. In my Chemistry class I use the lecture videos and the PowerPoints to take notes of all the new things we would be learning. Also, in my Chemistry Lab class for studying I just go over the assignments we did recently to keep the information fresh in my mind in case we do something just like it.
2. What specific techniques do you use in class?
In class I would mainly pay attention and take little notes here and there depending on what class it is. I do different things for most of my classes. In English during class we take Cornell Notes and ask questions if needed. For Sociology we are able to take notes during class but just a little since we go over and talk a lot about a concept.
3.What specific techniques do you use outside of class?
Outside of class I have notebooks for every class and when I have a new chapter to learn I would take a day or two to take the notes depending on the class. Using different notebooks helps me keep track of everything in the order we learn it in. Sometimes I would take notes online and organize them in different class folders.
4.Identify one class in which you are doing well (not HLTH 101). What study methods work best and why?
I’m doing well in my regular Chemistry class. The study methods that I use to help me is watching the lectures once or twice and taking notes from throughout and from the PowerPoints. This works best for me because I can go over it just once and understand the concepts. If I need a little extra help, I can refer to my notes or go back to the lecture videos.
STEP 2: IDENTIFY AND APPLY NEW LEARNING TECHNIQUES
1.Identify one class where you are experiencing challenges and address the following questions.
The one class I’m having a hard time with is my Chemistry Lab class. The problem is remembering the material that I used last year and how it’s a little different. Some strategies I will use is to talk with my lab partner and see if we they can help me out if I ever need it. I would also start a study group with some of the other students that have the same class as me. I would plan on studying for this class for at least two or three hours. I would spend more time on the prelab assignments so that I can get a better understanding for when we actually do the lab. To help me motivate I will have one of my friends who has really well study habits to remind me that I need to study or something. When I have to prepare for my exams, I will study harder to make sure that I understand what needs to be done and how well I have to do to pass.
2.Review at least 5 academic tips/resources listed here: https://www.odu.edu/success/academic/tips What is one new technique you could try in class to help you better understand the material? I would pay close attention to my professors lectures and use take notes accordingly. I would also make sure that I understand the concepts and instruction that they teach me
3.What is one new technique you could try outside of class to help you better understand the material?
I would use the Study Cycle to help me keep the information fresh and remember it very well. I think this will help me keep track of all the study habits I can use and what I can improve on.
