Gregory_Monique-1Interview With a Health Professional
The person I interviewed is Hillary Meachum. She is an ABA therapist who graduated from VCU with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. She currently works at Building Blocks which is a company that provides Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services in both the home and the community. She has worked with children since she was young, which peaked her curiosity to continue to work with children on the autism spectrum. Her job responsibilities include developing individualized treatment goals for children from the ages of 5 to 17 to help build new skills or decrease challenging or problematic behaviors. She says the most rewarding part of her job is watching her clients progress with skills they’ve had trouble with and building a connection with her clients. The most surprising part of her job is how broad the autism spectrum is and how different each of her clients needs are. The most challenging aspect is that all of the children progress at different rates. However, the progress in the end is worth it. Her advice is to have lots of patience and make sure to connect and build relationships with your clients and their families.
I really enjoyed the conversation I had with Ms. Meachum, and by doing this interview with her I learned more about ABA therapy. I have seen her working many times but never thought to ask her what her specific job duties were. It takes a special kind of person to do the work that she does and you can tell that she truly enjoys her job. This is the kind of passion I aspire to have for my career.
