Workplace Deviance & Technological Advances

Has the advancements of technology increased the amount of deviance in a workplace?

To answer this question, one must first know the definition of what deviance in a workplace actually is and consists of. “Workplace deviance refers to the deliberate, malicious intent to sabotage an organization by causing problems in a workplace.” (What is workplace deviance?, 2013) Examples of workplace deviance included, but isn’t limited to aggressive behavior towards coworkers, an employee not working in order to sabotage other’s efforts, destroying property, and spreading false rumors.

With this in mind, I believe cyber technology has increased the “property destruction” aspect of workplace deviance more than anything, Along with the increase of technology comes an increase in people that know how to use said technology. Among them being deviants that would use it for personal reasons or financial gain. And for employees, there’s much easier access for them to use the same technology to plague company systems with viruses or other kinds of malicious attacks from the inside. Even with measures taken to protect from the outside, it’s hard to identify/terminate harmful technology if the attack is coming from a registered employee.
