BIOL 497 Undergraduate Research

Taking the BIOL 497 course was an incredibly immersive and rewarding experience for me. It was focused on conducting laboratory and field research under the guidance of a faculty member, allowing me to not only learn but also contribute to scientific inquiry in the biological sciences. I dedicated at least three hours each week to my research, honing my ability to keep detailed lab and field notes, analyze data, and clearly communicate my findings through written reports and oral presentations.

During the course, I worked on fascinating projects, like studying marine organism behaviors and exploring ecological impacts within aquatic systems. The expectations were high, requiring me to demonstrate professionalism, organization, and an unwavering commitment to academic excellence. The process of gaining permissions reinforced how important this advanced elective was in my academic journey.

One of the most interesting discoveries I made was how collaborative and dynamic research truly is. I learned a lot about my own resilience—especially during challenging moments like navigating complex experimental setups or adapting to unpredictable variables in the field. At the same time, I had powerful learning moments where theoretical concepts clicked in real-world applications, strengthening my passion for biology.

The reports and presentations I produced were a testament to my growth throughout the course. Above all, I learned the value of meticulous research and persistence. If I could go through the program again, I might network more effectively with faculty and spend additional time refining my technical skills.
