Final Reflection

For the Service-Learning Project, I worked with Ignite Norfolk to complete the 5 necessary hours. I worked alongside Ignite Norfolk first to aid in ODU’s make a difference day on Saturday, November 2nd from 9:00am to 1:00 pm. For this event we traveled to Narticus the museum and helped to create stations for the children that were going to come for a tour and activities. Personally, my partner and I made dog toys from old shirts. My second time working with Ignite Norfolk was Thursday, November 14th from 2:30pm to 4:30pm. This event was Ignite Mentoring. During Ignite Mentoring we traveled to a local school to help young kids with their homework and thanksgiving activities after completing their homework. Both opportunities I had to work with Ignite Norfolk were both very interesting and engaging. I plan to return during my spare time.

My community partner was Ignite Norfolk. Their purpose is to enact the preaching’s of God every day, not through preaching but through activities and groups to make the community better. The creation of Ignite Norfolk was done to focus on parts of the community that lacked attention and bring love and positivity to the area. They provide mentorship opportunities, a pantry, worship opportunities and groups to speak and to empower one another. They address all the needs of the community like helping the younger generations, feeding those who need it through the food pantry, an outlet to those who need to talk to someone and empowerment to those who seek it.

After completing the projects that I did, I’ve come to realize that I enjoy working with children more than I believed I did before. Even helping them with their homework was fun. It was interesting being able to show them tricks to answer problems that they didn’t already know. After completing these projects, I planned to consider the different forms of nursing that include children in the daily activity.

Prior to the Fall 2019 semester I began working towards my CNA license. When working on completing your CNA license you must complete at least 120 hours of clinicals. During these clinicals I worked alongside many elderly people with many different backgrounds helping them to bathe, dress, eat and other activities of daily living which I enjoyed. Although after completing the course I knew I didn’t want to work with elderly forever. After working with these kids, I still want to pursue a career in Nursing although I plan to investigate one that may involve kids as well as adults.

My intended Career field is Nursing. More specifically I want to be a Nurse Anesthetist. It relates to the field of nursing because in nursing overall the goal is to help someone. Although instead of helping the kid’s health wise I was able to help them do their homework and complete some art activities. The service-learning work could relate more to a degree program like Psychology as well as childhood development. Psychology could be an option although It’s not a first. I would not major in childhood development because I don’t think I would want my work centered around working with kids and I enjoy Nursing. I think my parallel major would be Occupational Therapy or Health Service Administration. I chose these as potential parallel majors because they are still related to the field, I currently want to work in.

I don’t have a set amount of time that I study for any class. I study as needed so it depends on how much I understand the material. If I understand what I’m doing, then I won’t study the subject as much and focus on something I understand less. I have started using Khan Academy and other online sources to help me understand my work. Chemistry tutoring has worked well especially before test and helping me complete my homework. Over time I realized that I study better in Broderick Dining Commons alone in a corner rather than in my room. Now after classes are over for the day I go to Broderick to study and do homework.

I anticipated that in college I would have to write a lot more papers especially in English. Although after being here for about 14 weeks in my English class I’ve only written 3 shorts papers. The best resource I have found this semester was the chemistry tutoring room. I didn’t find the writing center to be very helpful. I went to the writing center to get help on an assignment in Interpreting the American Past. While the people there tried to help, they were also confused on the assignment. This semester I learned the ways that I study best. I will use this next semester to study in the way most fit for me from start to finish. 14 weeks ago, I wish I knew making more friends would be beneficial in the long run to being able to work together on understanding different concepts and using each other as support systems. Recently I’ve made a few new friends and we’ve been able to rely on each other for being helpful in explaining different topics to us so that we all better understand. Having friends in the same major and classes makes the days a little bit easier to get through.
