- Describe your current methods of study. How do you study for each class?
- What specific techniques do you use in class?
- When I’m in class I take notes to help me with the homework assignments. Although reading over notes isn’t the best way for me to study. Occasionally I review notes maybe last minute but I’ve found better ways to study material that I don’t get easily distracted from. For example flashcards or when I get with friends and we quiz.
- What specific techniques do you use outside of class?
- Outside of class I use flashcards and get with groups of friends to quiz each other. This works better for me because it helps my mind from drifting off into different places like when i sit in a quiet room alone reading notes. Another thing I do outside of class is to make my own powerpoints on the material I’ve learned as if I were teaching it to someone else. I study like this for all my classes except mathematics classes. Currently I am not taking a math class but when I do I prefer to get in groups and answer problems and see who does them fastest.
- Identify one class in which you are doing well (not HLTH 101). What study methods work best and why?
- Right now I’m doing the best in my sociology class. The reason I am likely doing so well is because I took a sociology class in high school that covered pretty much the same material. Although for the new material we learn I watched Crash course videos on so it makes the quizzes and homework easier.
- Identify one class (other than HLTH 101) where you are experiencing challenges and address the following questions.
- I am currently having a hard time in Interpreting American Past. History has never been an easy subject for me because remembering all the information along with the time period the info goes into is complicated. Currently I think the problem is the futuristic due dates. Although to study I plan to study in groups so that others can help me understand what I don’t and also so I don’t get distracted because it’s not my favorite subject to think about. I do all my homework between my classes and when I am done with classes for the day. For this particular class homework will get done as assigned but I plan to study at least twice a week with someone else until I understand the topic for that study session. Most of my time will likely be spent memorizing the time periods in which the events happened. I study and do homework based on whatever comes first. My system is pretty much whatever needs to be done first or whatever exam comes first determines what I study first and what homework gets done first. Currently I am not taking advantage of all my resources but I don’t believe the resources provided to me would be more beneficial than my current method of study. I don’t lack motivation to study because it has to be done and the class is required of me so it’s best to pass now than to retake it. Remembering to work in groups is what I need to continue doing because it’s most beneficial. One thing that didn’t work so well for me was working in quiet spaces because I got easily distracted and my mind was not focused. In quiet places I tend to do work without thinking about it. Questions answered incorrectly on exams were questions that I didn’t understand but also didn’t take enough time thinking about. Often times I doubt myself and give vague answers causing my questions to be wrong because they lack detail.
- I looked at breaking jobs into smaller ones, promising myself rewards for finishing tasks, Eliminate distractions, Create a to-do list and don’t overextend yourself. I could record the class to look at it later to help me better understand the material.
- Outside of the class I could watch videos and take practice quizzes to assure I understand the material.
