Cybersecurity is the work of monitoring and safeguarding important systems and information from different types of cyberattacks. The four majors I believe relate to cybersecurity are criminal justice, sociology, computer science, and engineering. My major is criminal justice and I am taking a cybersecurity course because I feel they relate to each other in terms of crime. Criminal justice is all about the law and justice being served for crimes, the prevention of crimes, and providing support to victims of crime. Cybersecurity and criminal justice are similar and work together because they work to prevent crime. If there is cybercrime committed, legal action could be taken, which someone with a criminal justice degree may become of assistance to the investigation. Sociology studies human behaviors and how they act in regards to groups, cultures, and societies. When a sociologist studies cybercrimes, they may examine things such as how humans handle threats and cyberattacks. They may be able to find ways to help prevent cybercrimes. It is not uncommon for people with an interest in cybersecurity to obtain a major in computer science. Computer science majors study computers and the process to develop and improve computer programs, software, and hardware. Someone studying computer science may want to learn about cybersecurity to secure a job in that field after graduating. Cybersecurity relates to computer science because although they are two separate branches of technology, they could still teach basic concepts such as program development. Software engineers study the development and the improvement of software and its lifecycle. Software engineers and cybersecurity both relate because technology is constantly developing and always will continue to. Even though they both are different majors and career paths, they both work intending to improve technology. Software engineers relate to computer science majors work to upgrade computer software as time passes. Cybersecurity relates to that because the field’s goal is to ensure that cyber threats and attacks are stopped and improve the prevention of those crimes.
