Linguistics provides crucial information as a Spanish teacher because of the importance of how words are developed, the history of how the language has evolved, as well as application of knowledge or technologies in the classroom to demonstrate the different themes that are displayed. It brings a deeper understanding of how language works around us and challenges us to be critical thinkers of not only these small changes over time, but how to incorporate it in our classroom to better develop students’ comprehension of historical and grammatical context. In one of my presentations, I discuss the Bribri language and its danger of being extinct. This is important for me as not only a translator, but for someone pursuing a career in teaching due to the nature that Spanish involves more than just its Latin roots, but also includes the indigenous people that have influenced culturally and linguistically the phrases we might hear today.
As I progress in my career as a Spanish translator, the influences of morphology, phonetics, phonology including the different approaches to applying these skills in the classroom will help me develop a better appreciation towards the nuances represented in the formation of sounds and how that has changed with time. One goal I have in the future is to be able to encourage other language learners about the importance of linguistics in the transformation of language and why it is especially important as an L2 student to not only distinguish between the evolution of sounds and the structure of developing this, but also the components that go into this development.
