Workplace Deviance Discussion Board

Workplace Deviance has expanded, in some ways, with the introduction of cyber technology. Businesses, schools and governments have always had a vested interest in how their employees spend their working time and as such have developed a menagerie of policies meant to keep deviance within acceptable norms. However, with the introduction of cyber technology there has become an influx of temptations and distractions for the modern worker. Smart phone apps, social media, tik tok, youtube, online dating or hook ups and the list goes on. This fact is only further exasperated with modern companies reliance on computers and their employee’s use of smart devices. Deviance is going to happen, we are human after all. But as professionals there are standards of business we all are expected to adhere to. Now I say all this more as a warning than a judgement or condemnation. As much temptation as there is for employees, there is an equal level of motivation for companies to monitor their employees cyber habits. You remember that guy/girl you hooked up with over company wifi? Your boss does. How about those hours spent on Facebook or whatever social media your into? Yep your boss caught that too. So what level of intrusion into your privacy are you willing to give for a bit of time mismanagement on the company dime? When I worked for Diplomatic Security Services (DSS) the sheer amount of private details that I had to review was a bit off putting to say the least. Now of coarse the Government has a bit more stringent security policies but the technologies in use tend to be even more effective within private companies. Everyone goofs off at some point, just don’t let todays goof be tomorrows albatross.
