Media has, what I believe to be, a net negative effect on the perception of what cyber security is and what cyber security professionals do. This negative effect is not caused by a nefarious motivation though, it is the simple by-product of making a normal situation theatrical for the purpose of entertainment. This gives the black hat hackers the evil, grungy, basement dwelling appearance in peoples minds while painting white and grey hats as heroes and anti-heroes. The reality, of coarse, is far less flashy and a bit more nuanced than the typical theatrical presentation. Follow that with make believe terms and “defensive” actions. Now you have an audience coming away with a fairy tale version of cyber security and bad ideas that may in fact make them more susceptible to victimization.
