I chose these two pictures of Kobe Bryant and Kareem Abdul Jabbar because they are both Laker legends. These two pictures were taken before their final game in the NBA. When it was Kareem’s final game there wasn’t any social media at the time, but everyone knew it was his final game because he is one of the greatest centers to ever play the game of basketball, they had a big ceremony before the game for him at the forum in Los Angeles. It was Kareem’s farewell tour and everyone who kept up with the game of basketball knew it was a big deal. The only people who captured the picture of Kareem on the rocking chair was the photographers that were attending the game, and those pictures probably didn’t get out until the next day on news papers. The other picture is of Kobe Bryant at his final game at Staples Center in 2016. This was a big deal because it was Kobe’s farewell tour and social media was buzzing for his final game against Utah. There was a hashtag that said Mamba day, snapchat filters that said mamba day, everyone in the sports world stopped and watched this game because everyone knew how special this day was for Kobe Bryant, Lakers nation and the sports world as a whole. I think the Kobe Bryant picture had more of an impact because Kobe dropped 60 points on Utah, and gave a very touching speech at the end and finished with the words “Mamba Out” and dropped the mic. Even though Kareem is on legendary status with Kobe Bryant, Kobe’s retirement was a bigger deal to the sports world and I think social media had a big part to play in that, such as Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and snapchat. I remember there was a video of NBA players around the league that the NBA made, and all the players who were in the video were saying “thank you Kobe”. Kobe’s final game was legendary just like Kareems, the difference between both legends last games were that Kobe’s was more known because social media, every sports account was talking about it and promoting his last game. If Kareem retired in today’s NBA, I think that his retirement would’ve been just as big as Kobe’s but social media wasn’t around then. I think the most effective way for these photos to be distributed would Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and snapchat, that’s why Kobe’s retirement was so well known world wide because people saw his mamba out picture instantly.
