Study Habits:
The classes I am currently doing well in are in Dance and Audience just because it is an
easy class to catch up on. If I miss a day I am not missing a whole unit compared to my other
classes. The class I need assistance with the most is History just because it is the only class I
have a bad grade in. I get all my work done and I provide evidence for the discussion questions
but I am still doing bad in the class. The changes I made while studying are studying by myself
and no longer studying with people. The amount of time I spend studying depends on how well I
know the material. For instance, in chemistry I take hours studying while for Dance I only take
an hour of studying.
Transition to College:
The expectations I had coming in for college was school being hard and the parties on
how crazy they would be. My college experience is different from I expected because school
isn’t actually hard but instead just depends on how hard you make it for yourself. I’ve also
realized that the college lifestyle isn’t for outside of school. But instead I find myself getting
bored from every weekend repeating. Something that surprised me about my college experience
is me not enjoying the college lifestyle. It was something I highly was expecting and once I
experienced it, I realized it isn’t for me like I thought it would be. The toughest challenge with
moving away for college was the food for sure. It just seems that everything tends to hurt my
stomach. Another challenge was having to be more reasonable with my money now, since I can
no longer buy what I want to buy now.
Major:
Something I have learned from my major that I didn’t know was that it requires a lot of
laboratory classes. My feelings have not changed about my major at all. But instead I became
more passionate about it and I am thinking about transferring to a nursing school instead. Where
it is a 3 year BSN school and you don’t need prerequisite classes like dance, history, etc. I
haven’t found a new major or a minor to minor yet. I am interested in psychology but I feel like I
would get bored real quick.
Connecting to Campus:
I haven’t encountered a major problem where I had to seek for ODU resources or
resources in general. Although when I realized the college experience isn’t for me and I just
wanted to focus on my major and decided to transfer. I had my friend listen to me and she
encouraged me to follow what feels right and made sure I just made the right decision. I have
gotten involved with LSA (latin student association) and I am also part of Wepa, the dancing
latin organization here at ODU. I decided to get involved with both because I still wanted to feel
connected with my culture outside of home.
Guest Speaker / Field Trips:
The guest speaker I like the most was the first guest speaker we had. She had explained
how she was a teacher first and then decided to pursue nursing. I liked her more because I felt
like I connected with her story more since she worked as an oncology pediatric nurse, which is
what I wanted to pursue in nursing. I would like to see guest speakers that are nurses and that
have experience with being a travel, labor and delivery, oncology nurse. Just nurses that have
worked every position in nursing.
