Topic One: The first topic I connected with in the course was module one, which focuses on privacy and the right that we are reserved surrounding this matter. My perspective of this topic changed dramatically as I went through the stories and grasped a deep understanding of how our privacy rights are owed to and the lengths some entities go to violate privacy. In the digital age we are challenged to protect our privacy by ensuring companies are implementing ethical practices while handling people’s information and data. Companies are bound by duty to treat privacy as a critical component of the digital age and without the proper privacy protections there should be legal ramifications put into place. My biggest takeaway is that we are also responsible for protecting our own data and information by ensuring we fully understand our privacy rights. We have to advocate for ourselves and ensure companies are being held responsible when they disregard the safety of their consumers and users.
Topic Two: The second topic that I connected with was the ethical tool Ethic of Care. Out of all the ethical tools, this one resonated with me the most because it’s a baseline for ethical practices that every person should inhabit, whether it’s personal or professional. In the modules we were able to see the disregard people had when it came to ethical standards. Ethics of care is not just a moral principle, but it’s also an emotional component in which people should connect to. It’s said we should never allow the suffering of others to benefit ourselves. Humans are inherently dependent on each other and care is a basic fundamental of life and should be treated with significant importances. My biggest takeaway from this topic is ethics of care is about prioritizing the care and compassion of people over anything else. Sometimes the unethical actions that we take can impact others in a way that is life changing.
Topic Three: The last topic I related to was the topic of whistle blowing. In the module we think about the different examples in which whistle blowing benefits the well being of others. We think about the risk that some people take when going against corporations to make the public aware of the corruption and danger that it poses to them. In the two stories related to this module they spoke about loyalty and if the obligation we owe to employers and companies through confidentiality. I personally think when it comes to the safety and well being of the public there is no such thing as secrecy. When I think about the video of the damage done in the video “Collateral Murder”, when Manning released the video it wasn’t because the government was a threat to the public, but because what they did was morally and ethically wrong. So when she released the video, she did not owe any loyalty to the government, but to the people of society. My biggest takeaway from this topic is that whistle blowing is not a negative connotation when it’s done out of the protection of others.
