After reading the letter I am able to apply a few different theories to the letter. The first
economic theory I can relate to the letter is the rational theory. Rational choice theory suggests
that both the defender and the attacker assess their actions based on expected payoffs and risks—
in this case, the letter serves as part of the company’s strategy to signal that the costs for potential
attackers have gone up. The next theory that I can relate to this letter is Marxist. Marxists
emphasize that big companies hold power by controlling essential resources. The breach
notification is a tool the company uses to maintain control and show that it is managing the
situation. It reassures stakeholders that, despite the breach, the company is still at the top and can
handle problems. The next theory I will relate to this letter is sociology theory. Sociological
theories help us understand that a breach notification letter is more than just a formal apology It
is a critical social communication tool created in response to the risks of modern society, using
symbolic language to manage public perception and restore trust. The last theory I am relating to
this letter is psychological theory. Psychological theories help explain why a breach notification
letter is crafted in a careful, structured manner. The letter is designed to lessen anxiety by
promoting protective actions, and it works to reduce the mental discomfort that arises when expectations are shattered. These strategies are key for rebuilding trust and guiding individuals
toward behaviors that mitigate the impact of the breach.
