Review the articles linked with each individual motive in the presentation page or Slide #3. Rank the motives from 1 to 7 as the motives that you think make the most sense (being 1) to the least sense (being 7).
Explain why you rank each motive the way you rank it.
When it comes to cybercrime, I do not believe there is any particular scenario that makes these crimes excusable, but there are exceptions in which it makes sense. My top choice for the most sensible motive would be political because the seriousness of new bills pushed have a significant impact on our lives with some being affected more by the new policies and laws. This motive feels more relatable when I think of the madness going on in today’s society, I understand what leads hackers to do what they do especially when it is in the best interest of the public. The second motive that is more rational is money. What I understand from the from results of the article is that most of the criminals use the stolen money responsibly. Going back to the political motive, based on where the economy is at and how it is going, the need to gain as much wealth as possible is extremely high so it is clear why money is common among hackers. The third sensible motive is multiple reason because all there may be many things fueling the urge to commit a cybercrime like the need of money while also seeking revenge on someone who has wronged you, so it is understandable for it to be more than one thing. The fourth motive is revenge because as I stated you can be driven to commit a cyber crime by someone who you have a personal vendetta against, or someone who has wronged a loved one of yours. The fifth motive that is a little less significant, but still rational is recognition as the need to be validated and recognized by your peer is pretty common for many industries regardless of if it’s legal or not, so I get why someone would partake in an online offense. The last two motive that are the least sensible is entertainment and boredom which are irrational because there is nothing to earn or gain by hacking just for excitement.
