Looking back on this semester, I am pleasantly surprised by the writing that I did this semester, I was never forced to think the way that I had to think in this class. My writings in high school weren’t as long, and they didn’t require as much time and effort to be put into them. The Food Memoir writing that we did halfway through he semester was the hardest one for me. It required a lot of thinking to find a deep memory that was related to or evolved around food.
I feel that my main strength as a writer is my ability to provide the important and specific details that a reader relies on in order to understand an essay or writing. For example, in my Food Review writing, when I reviews a local restaurant, I provided a paragraph full of information on the menu, including prices portions and sizes. All of those are things that a potential customer would look for in a review, and being able to give them that information gives them a better opportunity to learn as much as possible about the restaurant. Some things that I could definitely still improve on is my organization when it comes to the essays. My Food Review was the first essay that I wrote this semester and it was the essay that got peer reviewed. Having classmates review my writing and point out mistakes with organization that I didn’t notice, which helped me get my essay organized for the final copy.
The essay that I am most proud of is my Food Review, it is something I have never done before, going to a restaurant and sitting down and seriously criticizing their food and service. I had to take pictures, ask questions, and remember information about a restaurant and then put it into a food review which couldn’t be worded the same as a normal basic essay someone would write in high school, it had to be mainly informational. I could have my opinion in it but I didn’t want my opinion to be the only thing that they read. I wanted them to read the information I found out and feel like they knew enough about the place to have a general expectation on how it would be.
In high school, I was always told about how much harder college was going to be, I would say that I was prepared for the writings that I would have to complete in college. It’s not that they’re really harder to write, they just require a lot more thinking outside of the box and being creative. I also didn’t actually expect to write as much as I did this past semester, although it was a lot of writing, I enjoyed it because it actually made me think and I learned a lot of important new writing skills that helped improve my overall quality of writing in both my English class, and my other classes when I was assigned essays. This course helped me gain better knowledge on how to begin a good essay and keep it organized and interesting throughout.
