Since cybersecurity is an interdisciplinary approach, there can be multiple ways that other majors are related to cybersecurity. One major that is closely related to cybersecurity is computer science. Computer Science is a major that is focused on the science of computers involving data science, networking, programming, and also learning about databases. Computer Science is related to cybersecurity because in order to learn how to stop or prevent cyberattacks from happening by investigating and identifying vulnerabilities that may be in the network system, you have to learn the science behind a computer as well as how it functions and interacts with the network system. Another major that is related to cybersecurity is cybercrime. Cybercrime is a major focusing on the criminal justice aspect of cybersecurity learning how to gather evidence from hackers in their crime, about the hacker’s motives and goals for a cybercrime, and also how these cybercrimes impact society in the physical world. The reason why cybercrime is related to cybersecurity is because cybercrime gives the investigative part of cybersecurity and how to identify evidence from cyber-attacks, study the hackers’ behaviors based on the cybercrime, and being able to figure out why the cybercrime was caused. Cyber Operations is another major that is related to cybersecurity. Cyber Operations is a major that focuses on the skills to protect computer systems and networks from cyber-attacks. Cyber Operations also involve tactics and plans to infiltrate, exploit and mitigate computer systems. Cyber Operations is related to cybersecurity because cyber operations bring the offense and defense positions in cybersecurity where you infiltrate a hacker’s computer system to stop a cyber-attack and on defense you defend the computer system by applying security tactics. Computer Engineering is also related to cybersecurity. Computer Engineering focuses on the hardware aspects and how computers are built as well as how they function. Computer Engineering is related to cybersecurity because it explains critical infrastructure and how computer hardware can be at risk of a cyber threat.
