Service-Learning Project: Reflection #1
The project, at this point in the process, has been enjoyable and informational. I have enjoyed being able to meet other people in the class. Considering majority of the past year and a half have been online learning, being able to work face to face with a group of people is very refreshing. Our topic is a really telling topic for the current times; we’re looking into the various aspects of vaccinations and how they relate to genetics. To be specific, we are looking into COVID-19 for much of the presentation, while also adding other examples throughout history. We thought it would be a good idea to delve more deeply into COVID-19 due to the fact that it has impacted the lives of everyone in our immediate surroundings as well as the world.
As a group, we are all working very well together. We meet every Tuesday after class to work on the things that need to be worked on in person and then do our parts that we are signed up for. Logistics wise, we are still finding out how long the presentation will be and if there needs to be less topics. Vaccinations themselves have so much information to pull from, we’ve already had to start narrowing down the topic even in the first round of obtaining research. I, along with another group member, are looking into what vaccinations are and how they work in the body.
All in all, the project has been going smoothly so far. We have designated group members working on the activities and worksheets needed to be passed out during our presentation. Along with this, we are also planning on playing a small learning game towards the end of the presentation to help the kids review what we went over. We’re in the final stages of gathering the information needed before our dress rehearsal presentation next week. Once we have done that and gotten some feedback, we’ll be able to continue with the process of finalizing the presentation before the date they are due.
