My interest in cybersecurity

My interest in cybersecurity comes from the feeling of always wanting to help others and cybersecurity offers that by protecting individuals and organizations from cyber threats that are very common in today’s day and age. My major, cybercrime, will allow me to use both cybersecurity and crime teachings that can benefit me in the work field one day. There are many different majors ODU provides that can be related to cybersecurity. For this jounral entry, I have chosen four specific majors to talk about, 1) criminal justice, 2) psychology, 3) cybercrime, and 4) computer science.

Criminal Justice

The major criminal justice can interact with cybersecurity in many ways. Different criminal justice professions, often deal with many forms of cybercrime. Some examples of these forms that occur can include, hacking, identity theft, and online fraud. Skills that are learned from this major can be beneficial when using them in cybersecurity because both professions (criminal justice and cybersecurity) have a goal to catch people harming others and to protect other people from cyber threats that could occur.

Psychology

It might seem that psychology and cybersecurity cannot have similar ways of interaction, but it is important to understand human behavior in the field of cybersecurity so you can figure out why people do what they do and psychology allows for that to occur. When it comes to cybersecurity, learning why people do what they do and the reasoning behind it, can greatly help design safety measures that can prevent cyber attacks from occurring.

Cybercrime

Cybercrime and cybersecurity are very similar. Both of these majors and professions deal with online attacks and try to find the people operating behind those specific cyber attacks. These majors find ways to influence one another, especially in today’s current age when almost everything is online or finds a way to be traced back online.

Computer Science

Lastly, the final major that can be related to cybercrime is computer science. Computer Science can be seen as the first step to cybersecurity because to learn and use cybersecurity tactics, you must learn the foundations of computers which computer science does. Computer science also allows you to understand the systems and networks revolving computers which is further used in cybersecurity ways.
