Sandbox #9: QR Codes and Virtual Reality

My QR code will take you to the login page of my library catalog. I plan to post this around my library for students to use to login to view the catalog with their phone as they are pursuing the stacks.

The Van Gogh Museum 4K tour was so cool! Van Gogh is one of my favorite artists, and it was really neat to get to enjoy these amazing paintings without the crowds that I typically associate with large museums and exhibits.

My favorite piece of the Augmented Reality module was watching Jasmine use the double robotics machine to spend time working at school alongside her peers. It’s cool that she is able to control the movement of the robot herself and move from table to table, or do group activities or turn and talk with her classmates. This type of technology could be expanded to include more students in the future as districts move towards equitable access to educational experiences for students who are unable to physically attend school.

When I was purchasing the collection for our library, VR sets were an option in Follett’s catalog in the technology section. I didn’t know enough about VR to think that it was a worthwhile investment. After reading the SLJ article and going through one of the virtual tours, I could see how a VR set could have a place in a history or science classroom that would like to take a VR tour through a museum or other site that has significance to their content area.
