About Me

Welcome!

My name is Allison Barao. I was born and raised in Northern Virginia, and after graduating from Old Dominion University with an undergrad and Master’s degree in Elementary Education PreK-8, I moved to Virginia Beach.  I was a classroom teacher for seven years, the past six in 4th grade.  I’m known by my students and students throughout the school as an animal and plant lover, and a huge advocate for kindness, and known by colleagues as a creative and collaborative teacher that builds strong relationships with students and staff members alike. I decided to switch to a career in librarianship because I have a such a passion for igniting a love of reading in my students.  As a new librarian, I’m excited to connect with students all over the school and spread my love of books and information literacy to others!

My portfolio reflects the many roles I have adapted to be throughout my time in the MLIS program: leader, teacher, instructional partner, information specialist, and program administrator (AASL, 2018, p. 16). This portfolio demonstrates my growth through all of those roles in my artifacts. Through the tabs at the top of the screen, you will find my philosophy, which is centered around Ranganathan’s 5 laws of library science, and my resume that features my professional experience and highlights the skills that will make me an exemplary librarian. Additionally, 7 artifacts that showcase my work are accessible through the tabs.  Finally, I’ve compiled a list of resources that are beneficial for me as a school librarian to stay current throughout my career.

Thank you for visiting my ePortfolio!
