Alleghany Highlands Regional Library

The public library that I visited was one that I frequent often because it is a really great library. It is the Alleghany Highlands Regional Library and it is located in Covington, Va. The librarian I interviewed works at this library, and it has a lot to offer! When navigating the library’s website, there is information about the history of the library, there is a tab that shows the new releases in the library, like books and movies, there is a tab where patrons can access their accounts with library, and a search bar to look through the catalog. These are all located on the homepage when you first go to the library’s website. There are also tabs at the top where you can access their about us page, program/events, seed library, databases, virtual learning, and contact the library if needed. Patrons can also sign up for Hoopla and Overdrive through the website, and see upcoming events. I feel the website is good but it could be better. There isn’t really anything for diversity that I could find, I also didn’t see a way to change the language on the website either, or any kind of auditory assistance.

The library is a larger library. It has an upstairs that has meeting rooms and there are computers when you first walk in. The circulation desk is right at the entrance as well, the kids space is on the left side of the library and the adult books are on the right side. There are a lot of tables and areas to read throughout the library. There are childrens toys and seats where the children’s area is. There is a ramp that makes it more accessible for patrons in wheelchairs, as well as automatic doors and elevators to the floor above.

The staff is really great at this library. They are always so helpful and friendly whenever I have questions or just in general. The interactions between patrons and staff has always been friendly as well. Since I have been coming to the library, I have seen around six different employees. One of the employees told me that she only works on Tuesdays, and anytime there are job opportunities on their website, they are for part-time positions.  Most of the staff I have seen in the library are usually located at the circulation desk, and there is only one person who has an MLIS and that is the Library Director. I have seen one person who was putting books back on the shelves, but mostly they are library assistants who I assume do a little bit of everything.

The collection of the library is also a great collection. There are a lot of books both in the library and on their Libby app, and anytime I want to read a new book, or a book I see on Instagram or BookTok, it’s is almost always there; that is really nice because it keeps me from buying more books and keeps the weight light on my bookshelves! There is also a lot to choose from with their audiobook selections and they have large print books for those who need them. They do have a book club there as well that patrons can join, and the books are located at the front of the library near the computer hub which consists of around five computers. They also have hotspots that patrons can get, a large selection of DVDs, and also a large amount of encyclopedias and other reference materials.

Our textbook states that, “American public libraries remain strong because they have adapted to the fluid technological, social, and economic conditions of the twenty-first century” (Rubin & Rubin, 2020). Overall, I think this library is an example of a great modern library with a lot to offer the community of Covington and surrounding areas. It has a great collection of books, great digital content, and friendly staff who are always willing to help. Not only that, but when I interviewed the Library Director, she was so nice and helpful and has kept in touch with me ever since the interview letting me know that I can approach her if I need help at any time! I really loved looking around the library and seeing everything it has to offer, especially since I never really looked through it so thoroughly.

It seems like a wonderful library! The one I work at now and this one share the same online resources and I know from experience how user friendly and updated both of those apps are.

I love that you are using your library’s digital collection. It seems like many libraries do a poor job of advertising and promoting their digital content. My other favorite thing about digital checkouts is that they return themselves and I don’t get charged overdue fines! It’s so true that this is exactly the kind of flexibility and fluidity that keeps libraries relevant.

I like that you thought to check for a way to change the language setting. That would be very helpful! Did you suggest a change?

I LOVE the digital collection; it’s probably my favorite resource at the library and I agree about them returning by themselves, it is super nice, especially for a forgetful person like myself.

I love the look of this library. It reminds me of my home library especially with all that they have to offer. I also think it is great that the Library Director is keeping in touch and creating a true connection with you. I must say that the connection with others in the field has been one of the best parts of this assignment.
