Immersive Experience
I found this great video tour of Ancient Rome. It takes the viewer to important locations from the ancient world allowing for a 360 degree view of each place. There is a great voiceover that explains each location and gives historical context. In addition, this YouTube page has many other similar videos of various places across the world.
I liked that I was able to move around the video as the narrator spoke. The images are not still-frames, but movies, so it is possible to see people walking around, making this experience more lifelike than some of the other similar experiences I’ve seen through google Earth.
In a library these would be great to help students discover new places. Especially because this YouTube page has over 50 different locations, there would be opportunities for students to select something that interests them. Perhaps working with a social studies or world language teacher, the librarian could set the stage for bigger projects by introducing the new locations in this interactive way. There is both a visual and aural component to these videos that easily could serve to provide new information for beginning projects or further research.
