I listened to an episode of the podcast Book Club for Kids about Tuck Everlasting. This podcast reviews children’s books with children readers. The host, Kitty Felde, has a calm and well paced voice. She introduces the episode with upbeat flute music, and previews a few sound bites from the author and the readers. I like this idea of hearing from children about the books; they are the target audience, so it is very appropriate to hear from them. The children are articulate and easy to listen to. Felde asks the children to explain what the book is about, then has a celebrity reader who reads selections from the book.
Felde does a great job asking questions of the children readers, and allowing them to discuss the book and share their perspectives. In this episode, she discusses death with the children, since this is a major theme in the book. She does an excellent job asking the children respectful questions and is very open to hearing their opinions.
The podcast flows well and provides a unique perspective. It is very easy to listen to and is an appropriate length. The music helps with transitions, and appropriately connects to the content. The only issue was that this seemed to have been cut early; this episode ends in the middle of a child speaking. I searched for the podcast in a few places, and this was the case everywhere. Otherwise, it is a great podcast that gives just enough insight into the book and could be a great way to start a discussion with kids.
