Video Tools

Videoconferencing or videotelephony, has become more and more popular in recent years. The number of platforms users can choose from is growing exponentially, while the different platforms are becoming more niche. As of today Zoom and Google Meet are two of the most popular videoconferencing services, each catering to their own unique audience. Zoom is primarily used in the professional environment, where as Google Meet is geared more toward the everyday user and educators. Videoconferencing is one of many production tools that bridges distances, helps bring people together, and makes for a more globalized economy.

Video messaging and video recording are becoming easier to navigate and use. Loom is a free tool that allows users to quickly and easily make and share videos for presentations and lectures. Looms’ easy-to-navigate interface allows users to record using a webcam while being able to simultaneously screen share. Loom is a fantastic application that can help teachers streamline the creation of videos, while giving students a platform for their video projects.

Kapwing is a free video editing tool that allows its users to easily navigate the post-production process. This program, similar to Apple’s iMovie, is a drag and drop editing interface made for the everyday consumer. Being someone who is fluent with professional post-production software, I found Kapwing to be frustratingly limited. With that being said and without going on a tangent, I was able to make a 30 second video in just over an hour. One hour to edit a video start to finish says a lot about how well put together the program is. I would suggest Kapwing as a great starter program for students and teachers who know some or very little about the video editing process, but want to explore a new and creative medium.

  1. Wow, I appreciate your perspective on how time-consuming the editing process is. Maybe I’m not just being obtuse; maybe it really is normal for me to need such a long editing time to accomplish a video that is less than 4 minutes long. Note to self: Make videos as short as possible because you do NOT have hours and hours available to do them right!

  2. I had not thought of the similarities between Kapwing and iMovie, but now I can see it. I originally tried to make my video with Kapwing, but got frustrated very quickly! Kudos to you for spending an hour on your video, it looks great!
