A division of the American Library Association (ALA), the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) “empowers leaders to transform teaching and learning” (AASL, n.d.). The AASL focuses resources on leading a collaborative network for school librarians to grow in their profession through advocacy, policy development, research, and collaboration. By providing publications and conferences, the AASL helps school librarians stay current on trends and resources while reminding members of the standards of the profession.

The Virginia Association of School Librarians (VAASL) provides support to school librarians in the Commonwealth of Virginia though advocating for funding of school librarians and paraprofessionals in every public school. In addition, they foster the means to develop leadership in our diverse communities. VAASL provides the opportunity for school librarians in Virginia to network and share practices through collaboration at conferences and seminars.

Booklist is a publication of the ALA that provides reviews of books and other media for library professionals. Booklist is published 22 times each year. The companion website, Booklist Online, offers newsletters, webinars, podcasts, a blog, and lists of book and media awards. Booklist is a great journal that enables librarians to stay current on library resources.

Knowledge Quest (KQ) is the bi-monthly publication of the AASL. The companion website offers news related to school librarianship and the AASL, blogs related to various topics of interest to school librarians, and items of interest related to the community of school librarians. The research from the journal articles is a great source of information for educational trends and concerns related to school librarianship.

American Libraries is the bi-monthly flagship publication of the ALA. Each issue provides information on authors, books, and innovations in library science that are relevant to any library sciences professional. The companion website offers highlights of trends, the Scoop blog, an electronic newsletter, podcasts, a job list, and a regular interactive discussion on pressing issues. It is a wonderful forum for current information on everything that is related to libraries.

The School Library Journal is a monthly publication that features articles and reviews for school librarians. The companion website features book reviews and blogs. It also contains information related to censorship, public libraries, classrooms and curriculum, and diversity. The website is an excellent resource on recent news and issues related to being a school librarian.

School Librarians United is a podcast site. Amy Herman is a high school librarian in Detroit who talks with other school librarians about various topics, such as using audiobooks, building inclusive libraries, and motivating readers. To date, she has gathered almost 200 conversations with librarians around the world. Her interesting podcasts provide relevant information from practitioners who provide tips and guidance.

The Librarian Is In is a podcast by librarians of the New York Public Library.  At the beginning of each episode, the host states that the podcast is about, “books, culture, and what to read next” (Collerius, 2015-present). They also bring in other librarians to talk about what is going on in their part of the library. This is a great podcast to get views on books and stay current with library trends.

We Need Diverse Books is a non-profit organization with the mission of, “Putting more books featuring diverse characters into the hands of all children” (WNDB, 2022). The resources page provides links to websites related to diversity and inclusion through literature. The blog highlights books from early childhood through young adult that center on equity and representation. This site provides information to build a knowledge base and skills to evaluate literature containing portrayals of diverse characters and cultures.
