The assignment was my final research project for LIBS 610: Preservation Management in Libraries & Archives in which we were asked to explore a topic of interest regarding preservation and apply the knowledge we had gained over the course of the semester. I chose to think outside of what we expect to find in traditional archives and contemplate how future archives may evolve to preserve more than just tangible material heritage. My paper explored the scents that are slowly disappearing from our modern experience, case studies and research that has been conducted to discover historic scents that are no longer known to modern civilization and how we may be able to recreate and preserve them in archives. Most importantly, from a preservation standpoint, I provided examples that discussed the efforts that are currently underway to preserve scent and why this matters in terms of memory and our understanding of the past.
