
Jennifer LaGarde’s website offers ample resources for librarians to use. She has blog posts on current trends and issues in the field, professional development presentations, educational flyers on different topics and a link to her YouTube videos where she spotlights different books. The flyers she provides are great resources not only for librarians to use but to share with students and staff.
American Association of School Librarians
The AASL is a national organization for school librarians. The organization provides resources and professional development opportunities that are relevant to school librarians. This is an important resource as it provides pertinent information to both the librarianship and educational fields. It helps school librarians stay up to date with current trends and issues.
Association for Library Service to Children
The ALSC is an organization that supports library services to children. The organization provides resources and professional development opportunities that are relevant to librarians who work with children. One vital resource ALSC offers is graphic novel reading lists. The lists are broken down by grade levels (K-2, 3-5, and 6-8). This is an important resources as it helps librarians make collection development decisions in regards to ordering books. Their professional development opportunities allow librarians to stay up to date with current trends and issues in regards to children’s programming.
The Book Wrangler
Mike Rawls is the creator of The Book Wrangler. He has an active Instagram, Facebook and website. His sites are geared towards elementary school librarians. His posts provide current trends in the field and lists of recommended books for different occasions throughout the school year. This will be an excellent resource to use throughout my career as it will help me to stay current in trends and utilize recommended books from a successful librarian in my lessons and library displays.
Make: Magazine
The Maker Faire publishes four quarterly magazines a year. Their magazines focus on current trends in makerspace as well as tutorials and reviews. Makerspaces are often found in school librarians so this will be a great resource to use to stay current in the maker movement and find new materials to add to my library collection.
The Novice Librarian
The Novice Librarian is an Instagram account run by Ms. J. Patella. Her Instagram posts share elementary library ideas such as book suggestions and STEM activities. This is an excellent resource to use to find book selections and activities for library lessons.
Read Aloud Librarian
The Read Aloud Librarian is an Instagram account run by a K-5 librarian. The librarian shares book ideas, book related activities and library organization tips. This is an excellent resource to help me with ideas as I build lessons and activities to support student learning.
School Library Journal
The School Library Journal is relevant for librarians who work with children or teenagers. Its publication offers articles on educational policies, current instructional strategies, new technology and literacy. It also provides librarians with book reviews to help with collection development. It publishes 12 journals a year. Although there is a fee for this resource, it will be an important resource during my career to help me navigate current issues in school librarianship and to build a stronger library collection.
SCPS Curriculum Information
Being a school librarian not only requires managing a library but teaching lessons that aligns with the school division’s curriculum. Since I am hoping to find a position within the county I reside in, the SCPS Curriculum pacing guides will be a great resource for me to utilize both while I am in the program and afterwards. The curriculum guides are divided by school levels and provide a wealth of information such as standards, benchmarks and additional resources.
Virginia Association of School Librarians
The VAASL is an association for school librarians in the state of Virginia. This organization allows school librarians to connect with one another and gives them a voice in their professional field. It also provides opportunities for professional growth through conferences and professional development. This resource would allow librarians to network with other librarians who are in relative close proximity to one another. This is beneficial because it allows librarians to collaborate on issues relevant to their communities.
Virginia State Literacy Association
The VSRA is an association that promotes literacy throughout the state of Virginia by providing resources to its members. Some of these resources include instructional strategies, conferences and the Virginia Reader’s Choice program. Since promoting literacy is a vital part of a librarian’s profession this is a very useful resource.
Young Adult Library Services Association
The YALSA is an association that supports and promotes library services aimed at teenagers. This organization provides librarians with resources and continuing education opportunities. This is an important resource to help me build my school library’s collection as well as to stay up to date on current trends in youth services.
