Both of the images above were found on Pixabay and were free for use and modification without crediting the source.  I was surprised by the number and quality of the free images I found and will definitely be using this site in the future.

I chose the first image of a highland cow because I loved his shaggy hair and wonky horn.  It made me think of my dog’s crazy hair just before his trip to the groomers.  I always say, “messy hair, don’t care” so I thought I would add that phrase to the image.  I used Pixlr to edit the image, and to paint the sky and the grass, I used the fill tool and a drawing brush.  To add the words, I used the text feature.  Tools I looked at but did not use were the disperse and the cutout feature.  They will take a little more playing with but are features that looked really cool.

My second image was a black and white fantasy photo of a shell house.  I edited it using the tools in Pizap.  First, I cropped the image and added the palm tree graphics. Then I used the blue and purple watercolor overlay in the borders tool to make it look like it was underwater.  Last, I added the fish from the graphics tool.  I had a lot of fun transforming this one.  I feel like Pizap would be more user friendly for younger students specifically because the tool icons were larger and displayed more simply. It might be difficult for them to find their own images in Pixaby, but I could download a few for them to select from.  Then they could edit to personalize the image.

Depending on the images, students could use the pictures and tools to make inferences about how characters are feeling.  They could add words to the image to show what they think the characters are saying.  They could make predictions about what they thought might happen next.  Though probably best with older students, I feel like these tools would be a very engaging way to practice these comprehension skills.

I love the highland cow image! I thought your edit was very fun. I also used Pixlr and Pizap! They had so many options to choose from (and did not have a bunch of ads).

I love that you compared the highland cow to your dog 🙂 I know exactly where you are coming from! I also agree that many of these would be best for somewhat older students, but I like the idea of uploading the photos and having them ready for them! Great post!

The highland cow pic makes me smile. I agree that these tools would probably work best with older students. However, I think in a small group, younger ones could manage, especially with PiZap.

The cow is the greatest! I feel like the second image kind of looks a little like an alternate reality version of Spongebob. Very fun!

Your cow is fantastic. I had to show your fantasy shell house to my daughter. She loves mermaids and she said that is exactly where a mermaid would live.

Love your images! I used the shell as inspiration and permission for me to be “in the sandbox” with one of my images too. I am happy that I came up with something totally “not me” because I allowed myself to just play. Thanks for the inspiration!
