Paired Texts Teacher’s Guide

Standards

  • 1.2 Learner Diversity
  • 2.1 Planning for Instruction
  • 2.2 Instructional Stategies
  • 3.1 Reading Engagement

This assignment required me to pair two texts, fiction and non-fiction, that a classroom teacher could use while covering various SOL topics in class. I chose the topic of African Americans in the 1900s, leading up to the American Civil Rights Movement. The two texts were: Stella by Starlight by Draper and We’ve Got a Job: The 1963 Birmingham Children’s March by Levinson. The assignment outside of highlighting two correlating books, also required the creation of a pre-reading activity, bulletin board idea, discussion questions, and three instructional ideas with correlating SOL strands. I loved how this teachers guide was an example of creating or curating a lesson with activities for teachers that could be used in their own classrooms.
