EVMS Edward E. Brickell Medical Sciences Library-Academic Library Visit

For my academic library, I visited the Edward E. Brickell Medical Sciences library. https://www.evms.edu/library/ This facility caters to medical students and faculty from the Eastern Virginia Medical School and is accessed by use of their EVMS id card. The public can access to the library is available, but anyone not affiliated with the medical school must be buzzed in by a security guard, provide a photo id, and is issued a visitor’s pass.

Space

The library is located on the EVMS/CHKD/Sentara Norfolk General Hospital campus. The building is expansive as it encompasses four floors, but parking and handicap access are readily accessible. There is a large circulation desk on the first floor, and library aides, as well as a degreed librarian are always on staff during regular business hours (8:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m.). Each floor has multiple study areas for students and books and materials for reference. There is a limited space for the public wherein they can conduct medical research (the computers have limited access) only; however, the librarians can help patrons with their searches. There is a large computer lab for student and faculty use. Study rooms/meeting rooms are for student use but can only be reserved by faculty.

Services and People

This library has seven librarians-a director, an assistant director who also teaches classes, a circulation librarian, a librarian who oversees tech services, and three clinical medical librarians who accompany doctors and students on medical rounds and provide database and meta-analytical searches. Some of the librarians are on an institutional review board which evaluates ethical considerations for research and clinical trials. The library is organized using the Library of Congress Classification system . The stacks are composed of rolling stack shelving, and the information regarding the LCC is posted on the end of the rolling stacks.

Collections

As the library’s focus is mainly on research, most of the library’s materials do not circulate, however, there is a small circulating section for student use. There are periodicals and journals dating back to the mid-20th century, most of which can be accessed electronically. The library also contained books, DVDs, and CDs which did circulate.

Final thoughts

One area that I found interesting was the faculty commons. This area served as both a meeting place for faculty, but also housed the Medical History Collection. I really wanted to explore this area, as I imagined that it was full of medical arcana that would satisfy my thirst for knowledge, but alas, it was only accessible by faculty.

There’s a medical history collection in here I couldn’t access.

Wow, Leslie this was very interesting. I never heard of librarian actually making rounds with Drs. and students and providing database researches for them. That is fascinating and the librarian would definitely be an expert researcher and they seem to be. I looked on the website and saw that they are called clinical medical librarians with specialized training for this position. That is very impressive to be able to act in that particular role.

The librarian I spoke with is a clinical medical librarian. All I could think was, “I want your job.”

Hi Leslie. Thank you for sharing your visit. It’s nice to see that even though this library is primarily a research library they still have some books, DVDs, and CDs for patrons to check out This is the second library visit I have read that has moving/rolling stacks. What a great way to utilize the physical space and carry more materials.

I was impressed with the amount of librarians that they have working at this library. It seems this library also has specialized staff on hand to facilitate specific things. Sounds very special :). Thanks for sharing!
