The public can access to the library is available, but anyone not affiliated with the medical school must be buzzed in by a security guard, provide a photo id, and is issued a visitor’s pass.

Space

The library is located on the EVMS/CHKD/Sentara Norfolk General Hospital campus. The building is expansive as it encompasses four floors, but parking and handicap access are readily accessible. There is a large circulation desk on the first floor, and library aides, as well as a degreed librarian are always on staff during regular business hours (8:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m.). Each floor has multiple study areas for students and books and materials for reference. There is a limited space for the public wherein they can conduct medical research (the computers have limited access) only; however, the librarians can help patrons with their searches. There is a large computer lab for student and faculty use. Study rooms/meeting rooms are for student use but can only be reserved by faculty.

Study area near stacks with a study room on the left

Public access computers

Services and People

This library has seven librarians-a director, an assistant director who also teaches classes, a circulation librarian, a librarian who oversees tech services, and three clinical medical librarians who accompany doctors and students on medical rounds and provide database and meta-analytical searches. The library also contained books, DVDs, and CDs which did circulate.

Final thoughts

One area that I found interesting was the faculty commons. This area served as both a meeting place for faculty, but also housed the Medical History Collection.
