Sandbox #3 Infographics

LIBS 602

I enjoyed this week’s sandbox again. These sandbox assignments are becoming my favorite part of each week.  I love exploring new media tools in the digital world.

I chose to use piktochart this week. I honestly focused mainly on piktochart versus canva when I was deciding which tool to use. After completing my infographic I actually went back and explored easel.ly. Easel.ly was honestly just as user friendly as piktochart and I wish that I would’ve explored this one prior to choosing. The reason that I chose piktochart vs canva was because I knew that I was going to be inserting quite a few charts and I wanted to choose the one that was easiest to set up the charts. Piktochart made it seamless to add in the data and labels.  One thing that I loved about Piktochart once I dove deep into the infographic was all of the graphic icons.  Piktochart had a plethora of choices for basically any idea I typed into the search bar.  Only drawback once I finally downloaded the pdf was that the number of downloads is limited so I was nervous I would need to redownload my infographic and have to pay for the service.

When I was choosing how to design a template I actually chose one that was blue and green. After completing my infographic I went back through my infographic and switched all of the green to orange. I decided to switch these and use complementary colors that was suggested in our chapter 3 text from last week (Reynolds, 2014, p74) . I also used the dark blue and light blue monochromatic theme that was referenced in our text (Reynolds, 2014, p73).  I chose to use white text to make the text pop out from the blue.  If I would have used the normal black text it would not have been legible.

I could use an infographic for posters on my classroom or library wall. I actually designed one with covid protocols 2 years ago. I didn’t realize that I was creating an infographic more just information for my students. An infographic could also be used in a math classroom as an end of unit project after a test to summarize concepts. An infographic can be used in a library to promote new books. It could be used to sumarrize a book, a character, or several events of a book.

I got my information from Augusta County Public Schools website which is the school division that I currently teach for. In the beginning of the year I looked at these charts weekly. As the school year progressed I barely looked at the chart but knew that it would be a good place to grab some great numbers. My brain is math organized so this was an interest of mine.

You and I had a very different experience with Piktochart. I am glad you mentioned the search bar… because I couldn’t find it! After reading your entry I went back and looked again. I think I see why I missed it. It is available under “Shapes & Icons” but not under illustrations where I was looking! So I am very glad to know that it exists. I’ll have to go back and revisit it.

This was my favorite week so far. I found it a lot of fun to use all the tools too. My favorite was also Piktochart. I didn’t add any charts on mine but it’s good to know you had success with the charts. They look great in your infographic. I think you definitely picked the right color scheme.

Thank you on the color comment. I’m really trying to play with the suggestions from our book.

Nice job! I think your infographic looks great, but won’t it be nice when we don’t have to review data about Covid anymore? Look at all those cases in elementary school. That’s exactly why I still choose to wear my mask in the classroom.

Amen! I wish Covid would just diminish into thin air, even though I know that’s not a reality.

You made excellent charts for your data! I am very impressed by your infographic, and I feel like it looks very professionally done. It is simple and effective, just as it should be. Great job!

This came out very nice! I only skimmed around on Piktochart and I may go back and play around with it some more another day. The data charts on your infographic turned out so well!
