A Review of the podcast Books Between Podcast

Episode #75-Benefits of Rereading & A Conversation w/ Deimosa Webber-Bey

Books Between is a podcast by Corrina Allen that aims to help adults (teachers, parents, librarians, etc.) connect kids between the ages of 8 and 12 to the books they’ll love and this episode addressed the benefits of rereading.

Acoustically speaking I found the podcast to be very monotonous.  I”m not entirely certain if it is my lack of experience with podcasts (let me just say that I am definitely not an auditory learner) but, I it found that the lack any kind of background noise made the podcast flat and boring.  It wasn’t that I was disinterested in what she was talking about, in fact, I found the topic quite interesting.  It just came cross more like a lecture and less like being engaged in conversation.

Ms. Allen argues that while rereading a book over and over again is often met with disdain, there is a lot of value in the rereading process, and I quite agree.  Rereading allows the kids to see things they missed the first time around.  To give them a chance to discover tidbits of foreshadowing or to pick up on nuances often missed the first time around. I couldn’t agree more.  I know there are plenty of books I’d reread and enjoyed more, or appreciated differently each time.

In the end, even though I enjoyed her opinion on the topic, I feel it would have been a lot more engaging if she had a partner to banter with as the give and take would have made it more engaging to listen to.  By the time she did interview someone (towards the middle to the end of her posdcast) I had already lost interest in listening.

I had never realize just how much the auditory aspect of a podcast helps to keep me engage, build a rhythm.  It definitely helped me to realize why I often felt like napping during a lecture… perhaps it’s the delivery.  And, that has me thinking that perhaps HOW deliver information is something I need to reconsider.

  1. I agree that banter between hosts is really needed to help you engage in a podcast. I think this is the reason that most of the podcasts I listen to are hosted by friends and are more unique and random when it comes to topics. This works with my brain well.
