Welcome to Troutville!
My name is Lisa Trout and welcome to my journey. My journey didn’t start here, nor did I start out as a Trout. I became a Trout a thousand years ago when I moved from Massachusetts to DC on a whim. See, I did a year abroad in Salamanca, Spain (back in B.C. times) and met 2 amazing ladies there. We agreed that if we ever had the chance to all live in the same city again, we would. Then in 2006, one was finishing up at George Washing University, one had just received a clerkship for a federal judge in DC and so that left only me not in DC. So, I did what any rational twenty something would do- think about it. Just kidding!! I moved to DC 3 weeks later to begin work at a new job, and eventually fell in love with a Trout. One year later I was the only one of us ladies to remain in DC and I’ve been in the area ever since. 2 kids and 13 years later my ex and I decided we were better off just friends. We now live walking distance to each other so our kids can come and go as they please. Co-parenting isn’t for everyone but I think we’re doing ok. As for remaining a Trout, well who doesn’t love fish?! Actually, me. Ha! I don’t like seafood which is ironic considering I’m from the Bay State where everyone’s favorite summertime food seems to be the lobster roll, but I digress.
After being a stay-at-home mom for over 10 years, I still didn’t know what I wanted to be when I grew up. Unfortunately, I was no longer in Neverland and needed to make some decisions. On a whim (shocking- I know!) I decided to apply to an administrative assistant position in my local elementary school. Hours were perfect and it kept me on the same schedule as my kiddos. Two plus years later I am still there, working my way into their library. I cannot explain it other than to say that there is an energy, an electric positivity that buzzes around an elementary school and you catch yourself smiling as you walk the halls, feeling the students excitement. It’s like nothing I have ever experienced and I just know this is where I am meant to be.
Now, there are a lot of great roles in an elementary but let’s be honest, since I’m getting to repick my dream job I want it to combine everything I love: reading, technology, reading, creativity, book clubs, reading, research projects, etc. Suffice it to say, I cannot wait to be a school librarian and share my love for reading with the whole school!
