About Me

Welcome to my ODU MLIS e-Portfolio!  My name is Margee Durand. I am middle school educator and assistant librarian at The Williams School in the Hague section of Norfolk, Virginia, a truly beautiful and magical place (that’s part of our library above). I have been in education for 28 years working in the Hampton Roads area, Ithaca, NY, and Atlanta, GA. The majority of my time has been spent working in the independent school world as a middle school language arts teacher. I am excited to learn more about the innerworkings of the library and use that knowledge to further my work at The Williams School.

Books are my favorite people. At least that what I tell my students when they ask who’s my favorite! In all honesty, books and kids are my favorite, so together they are awesome.  I most enjoy getting nonreaders engaged with a good book they enjoy and watching the pride they feel when they have completed it.  This is the main reason for enrolling in the MLIS program.

On the personal side, I reside in Virginia Beach with my husband, two cats (Nigel Tufnel, yes, Spinal Tap, and Flerken), and my dog, Filbert, who tolerates us all!! I can’t resist a YA fantasy/dystopian/sci-fi novel or a taco of any kind. The last YA books I read were The Inheritance Games and The Hawthorne Legacy by Jennifer Lynn Barnes, such a fun mystery/romance(?) series.  I’ve just begun Briar Heart by Mercedes Lackey, an interesting fantasy spin on Sleeping Beauty.  And I’m waiting for one of my students to surrender Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao, she tells me it’s fabulous! Obviously, I love books and readers, so I can’t wait to see what this program brings me. Oh, and the last great taco I had was….the last one I was served!!!
