I appreciate very simple, clean fonts. Readability is really important, and I find that I get very frustrated with elaborate or narrow fonts. However, I find the traditional fonts that we used to insist were the only acceptable formal fonts to be really dull and tedious (like Times New Roman). I am partial to most sans serif fonts because they are easy to read even in a smaller font size. I also read somewhere that the typical reader only actually reads 18% of what they’re scrolling through when reading online, so I find that a simple font is more easily absorbed, at least by my easily distracted brain!
While I appreciate the creativity and elegance of the calligraphic fonts, I don’t think they are appropriate for online content. I believe this is especially true in the case of educational documents/sites. Struggling readers should not have to work to translate the literal script in addition to a sentence’s meaning. It is simply impractical (and frankly, cruel) to put up such unnecessary additional barriers to learning.
