VAASL will be vital in keeping me connected to fellow librarians. This association allows librarians to collaborate, meet together and attend conferences that become available annually. I will join this association in order to become a more well-rounded librarian and allow myself to meet others in the field.

This organization is similar to VAASL but on a national level. Also a division of the American Library Association, this organization offers grants, awards and recognitions for fellow librarians. There is also the opportunity to attend the national conference held annually. This would allow me to connect with librarians and instructors all over the United States.

Kirkus Reviews will be imperative in helping with my selection process for book collections. Highly reputable and authoritative, Kirkus is widely respected among librarians as a selection tool. The reviews by professionals are trustworthy, accurate and timely.

Because I will be teaching lessons to each grade level in the elemtary school, the VDOE website will be imperative to keep my updated about the current Virginia Standards of Learning. It can also aid in helping to prepare students in grades 3-5 for their SOL tests.

This is a Twitter account of Cara Dibbs, the Library Media Specialist at Three Oaks Elementary in Virginia Beach. She is also Virginia Beach’s Reading Teacher of the year for 2020. Following Cara will help me generate ideas that I can use in my own library and aid in collaboration with other librarians.

A division of the American Library Association, this organization is more tailored to fit the needs of an elementary school librarian, which I hope to become. Belonging to this association will enable me to learn from and grow with other librarians that service children’s needs.

The Horn Book is another selection aid that will prove important in my career. As highly respected as Kirkus Reviews, this website will allow me to find well respected reviews on children’s book to help with library’s ongoing collection.

This organization will empower new librarians to have learning centered literacy. Their practices are based on ideals that are equitable, diverse and inovative. Future Ready Librarians offer online courses, self-assessment tools and networking groups. They help to prepare librarians to have a future ready library and school.

The School Library Journal is an important resource for any school librarian and teachers. You can find book reviews, book lists, articles on best teaching practices, and new titles. It is helpful for new librarians and veteran librarians as well.

As a teacher and librarian in the Virginia Beach Public Schools, the Public Libraries will be an invaluable resource for me and for my community. With their databases and outreach programs, the public library is something that I will be using often as a librarian.

Being a member of the Virginia Library Association will help me to stay updated on the latest news and best practices. It will give me a community of librarians to belong to and reach out to. The VLA offers an annual conference that will give me the ability to meet and collaborate with other professionals.
