In LIBS 656, User Services and Programming, for the assignment Serving the Underserved, we were given the challenge to identify an underrepresented or underserved population and then develop a new service or program to attract them to the library. This was a most meaningful assignment for me. It immersed me in the full range of activities essential for making a well justified case for a new program. I synthesized information from a detailed needs assessment I had completed. I gained experience using demographic data to identify the underserved, understand their needs, and create solutions in association with community groups.
