The three-year collection development plan I created for LIBS 658, Knowledge Resources: Planning, Selecting and Managing Collections, is the culmination of a multi-part assignment. We had to complete an environmental scan, needs assessment infographic, collection analysis, and a literature review. I liked the comprehensiveness of this assignment and the “learning by doing” approach. For the library selected, I was required to think about the needs of a diverse community, examine the library’s strategic plan, use selection principles, do literature searches, ground my recommendations for changes in scholarly research, and consider the library’s budget for implementing the changes, and strategies for measuring impact.
