In LIBS 648, Reading, Evaluating, and Selecting Graphic Novels, we had to develop three original booktalks from among the dozen graphic novels we read in class. I structured my talks around a unifying theme, “The Strength that Comes from a Bond.” For LIBS 644, Literature for Young Adults, I developed and recorded booktalks to encourage summer reading for teens. I gained considerable insight into how to write and present effective booktalks. The principles I learned will be valuable for talks on any genre or targeted at any age demographic. As I expect to work in public libraries, I anticipate using this experience to entice readers and promote books in our collection.
