Blog – Library Visit to Jordan-Newby

As Lesneki states “Libraries serve as critical community partners by evaluating current and future needs and proactively filling gaps in the community fabric. Often libraries forget to use a key asset in their toolkit: the outdoors. Library buildings have historically included outdoor spaces, often to underscore the building’s significance and to contribute to the beauty of place.” (2016, August 3).  That couldn’t be further from the truth in regards of In my second library visit assignment, I decided to choose the Jordan-Newby Anchor Branch Library at Broad Creek. In this regard we help learn more of many libraries from the outside.

This library first opened on June 14, 2018 from its previous location 961 Park Avenue. It is a two-story building found within the north side of Princess Anne Road among Majestic Avenue and Norchester Street. The building currently holds management departments, while each of the two floors holds certain departments. The first floor being solely circulation, media (DVD’s and CD’s) and its children’s library along with it; sadly, due to the current restrictions the computers for the children’s library are inactive. The second floor however is solely having books ranging from Fiction, Non-fiction, YA Novels, Graphic Novels and Bibliographies, with its computer lab active but a limitation of 16 out of 26 computers active due to restrictions.  Originally there were to ways to enter the library both front and back but now people are only allowed to come in on the back where the parking lot is.

Even with some current changes unto the library’s made not always seen as ideal, Dahlkild’s statement regarding library trends stating “Library professionals, architects, patrons, and trustees have all been innovators and have participated, to varying degrees, in the formation of the discourse.”(Dahlkild, N. (2011), p.40)) leaving it up to more on how we as people can more than enough potential for the better just as much as how we tend to create problems.  Library’s and those related to the field are not perfect, which is why I am opened to experience what we can restrictions aside as long as it’s overall for the better.
