Sandbox #8 – Staying Current

Before starting this course, I knew the bare minimum regarding technology and how to properly use it in a classroom. I was able to make a video on my MacBook Air, edit and post. I knew this was not sufficient knowledge in this field and my familiarity needed to be expanded. As this course LIBS602 began, I was immediately intimidated and unsure of ability to learn the material and succeed in the course.

I would not have classified myself as a technophob, however after our weekly readings, I recognize some traits in myself. I repeatedly asked those who I deemed talented in this field for guidance, realizing “technology is a skill, not a talent” (Szmodis,2021). With this new information and skill, I understand that I can excel in technology geared for teaching. I have begun practicing with various online tools.

Recently I have been on TikTok following different librarians and exploring the information they have to offer. I am in a unique situation at work , and I did not know how to cover a book the correct way. I found a librarian who gave a tutorial on book covering and repairing, I saved it and will practice this skill as well.  Kelsey Bogan stated, “you are limited by your own imagination”. Her blog speaks to being intentional in your use of social media in a way that will expand your knowledge (Bogan, 2021).

The list sponsored by AASL “Best Digital Tools for Teaching & Learning”,  explores different options for use in the library.  This was an extensive list and many of the tools I was not familiar with and have not used in my library. After exploring the list IVox and Diverse Book Finder are my two favorites.
